Bernhard Maass

Bernhard is a nuclear structure physicist specializing in laser spectroscopy of rare isotopes. His research focuses on extracting fundamental nuclear properties from the subtle imprints they leave on atomic spectra. By measuring these spectra with high-precision laser systems, he investigates the structure and behavior of exotic nuclei.

He established and maintains ATLANTIS, a state-of-the-art collinear laser spectroscopy beamline developed in collaboration with TU Darmstadt, Germany, which operates with beams from the CARIBU facility. He is also part of the N=126 Factory collaboration, which is building a new beamline dedicated to laser spectroscopy of heavy isotopes.

In addition to these projects, Bernhard is advancing the field through the development of high-precision ion traps, designed to push laser spectroscopic techniques beyond the current limits of collinear approaches.

Bernhard joined the division in 2025.
