Biography
Corby Schmitz is the information technology manager for Argonne’s Physical Sciences and Engineering directorate, supporting scientific research and engagement in concert with Argonne’s central IT organization.
In his over 20-year career at Argonne, Schmitz has held a variety of roles, providing and leading IT efforts in support of the lab’s scientific mission. His focal areas have been High Performance Computing/Networking, cyber-security, as well as campus networking and telecommunications.
Schmitz earned a master of science degree in computer science from Loyola University of Chicago, where he has also served as an adjunct faculty member since 2000. He teaches a variety of courses and has developed a cyber-security curriculum with emphasis on intrusion detection, network security and wireless networking.
Schmitz has been a volunteer participant in the annual Super Computing conference, sponsored by IEEE and ACM. The IT organization within the conference — called SCinet — is responsible for building the world’s fastest temporary network to facilitate scientific demonstrations on the conference show-floor. Schmitz has served in a number of positions, both technical and leadership, over the past 15 years. In 2016, he led the SCinet organization and served on the conference Executive Committee. Most recently, he worked with the scientific demonstrators to orchestrate their demonstrations across the network infrastructure to provide the greatest chance of success.
