Dean Smith

Assistant Physicist - Term


Dean joined the High Pressure Collaborative Access Team (HPCAT, X-Ray Science Division) as a Physicist in December 2019.

Prior to his joining Argonne, Dean held a postdoctoral position at University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where he entered long-term collaboration with HPCAT scientists in developing instruments which combine focused CO2 laser illumination with the diamond anvil cell (DAC) high-pressure device and X-ray techniques. Such instruments allow in situ measurements on materials at extreme pressures and temperatures. As a member of HPCAT, Dean is concerned with the further development of these and other optical instruments for the DAC, with particular scientific interests in the structure and bonding properties of compounds including semiconductors, ceramics, and minerals.
