Fredrik Tovesson

Deputy Associate Laboratory Director

Dr. Fredrik Tovesson is the deputy associate laboratory director for Nuclear Technologies and National Security at Argonne National Laboratory.

Biography

Dr. Tovesson has more than 20 years of experience in experimental nuclear physics and nuclear technology. Prior to his current role, he served as director of Argonne’s Physics division from 2019 to 2025. Tovesson came to Argonne from Los Alamos National Laboratory, where he worked since 2004. He was on assignment to the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) in Washington, D.C., from 2017 to 2019. At NNSA he served as a technical advisor in the Office of Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation R&D, working primarily on radiation detection technology. He also supported the Office of Science’s Nuclear Physics program as the advisor for nuclear data, working on interagency coordination. Prior to this, Tovesson led accelerator-based nuclear science experiments at Los Alamos that supported national security and nuclear energy programs. Tovesson earned a doctorate in nuclear physics from Örebro University, Sweden. He is a member of the American Nuclear Society and serve on the executive committee of its Accelerator Applications Division.
