Gary Hu

Mechanical Engineer

Biography

Dr. Gary (Tianchen) Hu is a mechanical engineer at ANL and holds a joint appointment with the University of Chicago. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Washington University in Saint Louis and Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Duke University.

Dr. Hu is a core developer and maintainer of the Multiphysics simulation tool MOOSE, the MOOSE solid mechanics module, and several MOOSE-based applications for modeling fracture-related physics. Dr. Hu is the author of the NEML2 library for GPGPU-accelerated high performance material modeling. He has extensive experience with energy storage systems including high temperature heat exchangers, long term thermal energy storage, solid state batteries, and light water reactors through various projects funded by DOE-NE’s Nuclear Energy Advanced Modeling and Simulation (NEAMS) program and DOE SETO. Dr. Hu also has service roles in US Association for Computational Mechanics (USACM) and is an active reviewer for computational fracture mechanics-related journals.

Dr. Hu’s focus areas include the finite element method, computational fracture mechanics, high performance computing, uncertainty quantification, reduced order modeling, and scientific machine learning.
