Biography
Synchrotron-based techniques are invaluable tools for characterizing complex biological, earth, and environmental systems. X-ray fluorescence microscopy provides critical spatial information on various elements simultaneously and without sample pre-processing, while X-ray absorption spectroscopy reveals the local speciation of elements of interest. These complementary techniques are indispensable for understanding biological and environmental processes at various spatial scales. Throughout my career, I have developed and utilized X-ray fluorescence microscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy, to study organisms ranging from small zebrafish larvae to large pilot whales.
At Argonne, my role is to advance the applications of synchrotron X-ray microscopy techniques in biological and environmental sciences through the eBERlight program, a new initiative at the Advanced Photon Source funded by the DOE/BER.
Before joining Argonne, I was a senior scientist at the Canadian Light Source, where I led the construction and commissioning of the BioXAS sector – a suite of three beamlines dedicated to biological applications of X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray fluorescence microscopy.
