Biography

Jeff Collins is the Mechanical Engineering and Design (MED) Group Leader in the APS Engineering Support Division.  The MED Group provides mechanical engineering support for operations and maintenance of the accelerator, RF systems, and beamlines.  The MED Group is responsible for the design and fabrication of new components for the accelerator, insertion devices, vacuum chambers, front ends, and beamlines.  A subsection of the MED Group provides survey and alignment support for accelerators, beamlines, and inspection of components.  In addition, the MED Group provides mechanical engineering support for the APS Upgrade project, other DOE facilities as directed, and provides R&D in support of operations, upgrades, and LDRD’s.

Jeff brings to the MED Group a highly diverse engineering, project management, and leadership skill set, and a record of success that will continue the MED Group’s well-earned reputation for engineering excellence.  He began his career at the APS in the spring of 1990 and spent over 25 years designing testing suites for goal-oriented engineering research in the fields of enhanced heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and metallurgy. Jeff is an active member of the Argonne Pressure Technology and Safety Committee (PTSC) and is a subject matter expert for hydraulic, thermal, pneumatic, and mechanical stored energy. He holds a Master of Science Degree in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology.
