Group Leader, Grid Expansion and Interdependencies

Biography

Jonghwan Kwon leads the Grid Expansion and Interdependency Group in the Energy Systems and Infrastructure Assessment Division at Argonne National Laboratory. His research examines how power systems should be planned and priced as electricity demand grows and the generation mix shifts. He works on national-scale generation and transmission expansion planning, probabilistic resource adequacy and reliability assessment, and electricity market design, with a growing focus on the interdependencies between the electric grid, natural gas systems, and large data center loads. His group builds the modeling capabilities behind this work, including the A-LEAF planning platform, the LUMINA grid foundation model, and the GridMind agentic analysis framework, in support of DOE programs and industry partners. He holds a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Arizona State University.
