Lahsen Assoufid

Senior Physicist, Group Leader

Leads a multidisciplinary research team focused on R&D and fabrication of innovative X-ray optics and characterization tools to advance scientific research at large-scale, high-brightness synchrotron facilities like the Advanced Photon Source.

Biography

Lahsen Assoufid is a Senior Physicist and Group Leader of the Optics Group in the X-ray Science Division at the Advanced Photon Source (APS), Argonne National Laboratory. In this role, he is instrumental in advancing the group’s research and development in X-ray optics, driving scientific and technological breakthroughs at APS. Lahsen oversees R&D and operational activities at the APS 1-BM Beamline, dedicated to optics and detector testing, which serves both APS beamlines and the broader user community.

Lahsen received his Ph.D. in Physics with Highest Honors from the University of Paris-7 (now part of University Paris City), with his dissertation conducted at Cornell University in collaboration with Université Pierre & Marie Curie (Paris VI), France. With over thirty years of experience in X-ray optics, metrology, and instrumentation, he is a recognized authority in his field.

A Fellow of both SPIE and OSA/OPTICA, Lahsen also serves as Deputy Editor-in-Chief for OPTICA Journal. His extensive contributions to the field include numerous publications, and he has chaired and organized several major conferences and workshops in X-ray optics and related areas.
