Moon Park

Postdoctoral Appointee

Biography

Moon Park received a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Waterloo in 2020 under the supervision of Prof. Zhongwei Chen. During his Ph.D. study, Moon focused on the development of bifunctional electrocatalysts for rechargeable Zn-air batteries. Dr. Before joining Argonne, Dr. Park held a postdoctoral position at the same research group with a year of experience as an international visiting scholar at the Korean Institute of Materials Science (KIMS) from 2020 to 2022. At the KIMS, he participated in several anion-exchange-membrane (AEM) water electrolysis projects and contributed to the development of the most durable AEM water electrolyzer stack. Dr. Park’s research interests include fundamental understandings of materials science and electrochemical reactions such as oxygen reduction (ORR), oxygen evolution (OER), and hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) on electrocatalyst materials applied in non-aqueous Li-Oxygen batteries, aqueous Zn-air batteries, and water electrolysis system.

Currently, Moon participates in DOE (VTO-EERE) research projects (advisor: Dr. Khalil Amine (current), Dr. Larry A. Curtiss (former)) for the development of long-lasting Li-O2 batteries, majorly focusing on (i) study of electrocatalysts supporting lithium superoxide (LiO2) (ii) lithium plating study for elongated cycle life of Li-O2 batteries (iii) exploring novel additives (e.g., redox mediators) to electrolytes (iv) solid-state electrolyte-based Li-O2 batteries. Furthermore, since July 2024, Moon started a new role as a leader of a joint research team from a collaboration between Argonne (Dr. Larry A. Curtiss) and IIT (Prof. Mohammad Asadi) for an Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) 1K-Propel project. The major research objectives of the project aim to develop optimized SSE for Li-O2 systems possessing equal or exceed 1,000 watt-hours per kilogram and 1,000 watt-hours per liter at the end of life and at the net energy storage system level.
