Biography

Paul Rossi is a seasoned Certified Safety Professional with over 20 years of experience leading and managing environmental, safety, and health (ES&H) programs. Throughout his career, Paul has demonstrated a proven ability to manage complex safety initiatives and oversee the safety of large-scale research facilities, industrial operations, and cutting-edge scientific projects.  He has held senior safety leadership roles at top-tier institutions, including Argonne National Laboratory, Michigan State University, and Indiana University, where he has earned a reputation for developing and implementing safety programs that drive both regulatory compliance and organizational excellence.

Currently, as the Directorate Safety Manager for Photon Sciences at Argonne National Laboratory, Paul oversees the safety program for the Advanced Photon Source, a premier Department of Energy (DOE) user facility. In this capacity, he manages a multidisciplinary team of safety professionals with expertise in areas such as lasers, explosives, biological safety, industrial hygiene, and transportation. Paul’s leadership ensures that safety protocols are maintained at the highest standards while supporting the laboratory’s ambitious research goals.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to safety, Paul received the UChicago Argonne Board of Governors Team Award for Outstanding Safety Performance in both 2015 and 2024. He is also a key member of the Machine Advisory Committee for the Linac Coherent Light Source II at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, where he provides safety oversight for cutting-edge accelerator research.

Earlier in his career, Paul played a pivotal role in managing ES&H programs at Michigan State University’s National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory, overseeing safety for major research projects like the Coupled Cyclotron Project and the S800 Spectrometer Project. At Indiana University, he contributed to the development and implementation of key safety initiatives, including radioactive materials control programs and hazardous waste management systems.

In addition to his extensive safety expertise, Paul holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Governors State University and a Bachelor of Science in Human Resources Management from The New School. His deep commitment to safety and his ability to assess risks, identify hazards, and develop proactive solutions make him a valuable asset to any organization, particularly those working in high-risk and highly regulated environments.
