Stephan Rosenkranz

Sr. Group Leader, Sr. Physicist | Argonne Distinguished Fellow

Biography

Stephan Rosenkranz is an Argonne Distinguished Fellow and Group Leader in the Materials Science Division. He did his undergraduate and graduate studies at ETH Zürich where he obtained his Ph.D. for neutron scattering studies on rare earth nickelates. He then expanded his investigations on emergent phenomena in strongly correlated electron systems first by complementing neutron scattering studies with synchrotron x-ray scattering methods as Postdoctoral Associate at Argonne National Laboratory and then with angle resolved photo emission spectroscopy (ARPES) investigations as Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Illinois at Chicago. In 2002, he was appointed to staff in the neutron and x-ray scattering group at Argonne.

Rosenkranz’s current research is focused on developing and utilizing advanced neutron and synchrotron x-ray scattering methods to probe short-range spin, charge, and lattice correlations and how they impact materials properties. He was lead-PI for the unique CORELLI instrument now in operation at the Spallation Neutron Source, Oak Ridge National Laboratory and is involved in the development of novel methods to obtain physical models of correlated disorder from large diffraction data sets.

Rosenkranz was awarded the ETH Pólya Prize (1992), the ETH medal (1997), and the University of Chicago Distinguished Performance Award for Argonne Scientists (2006). He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the Neutron Scattering Society of America and served as President of the Neutron Scattering Society of America.
