National User Facilities | Argonne National Laboratory

Argonne’s user facilities provide researchers with open access to the most advanced tools of modern science. Each year, over 10,000 researchers from academia, industry, and government laboratories use these facilities to perform new scientific research. Argonne’s Physical Sciences and Engineering Directorate is home to several state-of-the-art national scientific user facilities.

Argonne Tandem Linac Accelerator System

The prime national facility for nuclear structure research, the Argonne Tandem Linac Accelerator System (ATLAS) is the world’s first superconducting linear accelerator for heavy ions at energies in the vicinity of the Coulomb barrier.
