AI
Advances in data analysis, machine learning, and new hardware architectures will enable precise modification and control of biological and environmental systems.

The capacity to predict, control, and understand biological systems in mechanistic, often molecular detail, is on the horizon. Biology is being transformed by the ability to collect large, multimodal data across spatio-temporal scales, as well as by tools that enable precise modification and control of biological and environmental systems.

Advances in data analysis, machine learning, and new hardware architectures — coupled with large-scale simulations enabled by high-performance computing — are transforming our capacity to connect molecular interactions to higher levels of organization, from cells to ecosystems. To deliver on the promise of emerging technologies — offering personalized medical solutions by developing and testing hypotheses in laboratory or clinical settings — requires fundamental advances in statistical machine learning and AI.
