As a multi-disciplinary, national security-oriented division within a multi-purpose Office of Science laboratory, we are uniquely positioned to leverage scientific and engineering breakthroughs to strengthen U.S. prosperity and security. We strive for a secure future through science-grounded approaches to multifaceted risks.
Our mission and vision reflect our research priorities of securing our energy future, driving nonproliferation innovation, countering chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear (CBRN), and cyber threats, and harnessing R&D in critical and emerging technologies to enhance national security. We further leverage cross-cutting Foundational Capabilities in modeling and simulation; knowledge and data management; technology and systems assessment; workforce development; and emergency response – among others – to deliver on a variety of mission imperatives for our federal sponsors. Responsible integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into our mission work accelerates insight generation for national security benefit. Many of our efforts leverage the expertise, capabilities, and facilities of our partners across Argonne.
- Secure Our Energy Future: Enhance the security of advanced nuclear reactors and our energy grid.
- Drive Nonproliferation Innovation: Protect U.S. technology from misuse and diversion while facilitating legitimate trade and innovation.
- Harness Emerging Technology R&D for Security: Leverage R&D in emerging and disruptive technologies and unique Argonne facilities to strengthen U.S. prosperity and security.
- Counter CBRN and Cyber Threats: Protect people and infrastructure through advanced detection, response, and mitigation tools and strategies.
