X-ray Science

Harnessing the power of X-rays to transform materials science, energy, and medicine.

X-ray science revolutionizes our understanding of the physical world, enabling researchers to explore the structure and behavior of materials at unprecedented resolution. From designing next-generation batteries and quantum materials to uncovering the molecular basis of diseases, X-ray techniques provide crucial insights that drive technological innovation.

At Argonne, researchers harness cutting-edge X-ray techniques, including diffraction, scattering, and imaging to investigate complex materials and biological structures. These methods are essential for industries ranging from reliable energy and healthcare to aerospace and nanotechnology.

To enable world-class research, Argonne’s Advanced Photon Source (APS) generates some of the brightest X-ray beams in the world. The APS provides scientists with unparalleled access to high-energy X-ray beams, facilitating discoveries in fields such as, advanced manufacturing, semiconductor design, and drug development. The recently completed APS Upgrade further enhanced capabilities, enabling deeper insights into material properties and dynamic processes in real time.
