Merzari receives ALCF computing time

Elia Merzari, a principal nuclear engineer in the Mathematics and Computer Science Division at Argonne National Laboratory, has received 85 million core-hours on the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility resources for his project High-Fidelity Numerical Simulation of Wire-Wrapped Fuel Assemblies.”

Each year, the Argonne Leadership Computing Challenge program selects projects with an emphasis on high-risk, high-payoff simulations in areas directly related to the DOE mission. Under the one-year award Merzari will carry out large eddy simulation (LES) of wire-wrapped rod bundles with the objective of validating and verifying lower-fidelity Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes–based models. The LES data will complement experimental data and support model improvement, especially in the area of heat transfer turbulence modeling where experimental data provides only limited guidance.
