Biography

Valentine Novosad is a Senior Scientist and Argonne Distinguished Fellow at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory. He earned his M.S. with honors from the Kharkiv Aviation Institute, Ukraine, in 1993, and pursued Ph.D. research at the Verkin Institute for Low Temperature Physics and Engineering (National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine) and the Laboratoire de Magnétisme Louis Néel (CNRS) in Grenoble, France, where he investigated diffraction magneto-optical Kerr effects. He then completed postdoctoral training at the Department of Materials Science, Graduate School of Engineering, Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan, focusing on geometric confinement effects in ferromagnetic dot arrays.
Dr. Novosad joined Argonne in 2001 as an Assistant Scientist. His research spans fundamental and applied studies of magnetic and superconducting thin films and patterned heterostructures, with impact areas including spintronics, quantum sensing, nanomedicine, cosmology, and large-scale physics experiments. He has mentored thirteen postdoctoral researchers, six visiting scientists, fourteen graduate students, and nineteen undergraduate students. He has also served as a Ph.D. advisor at Drexel University and Northern Illinois University.
He has authored over 300 peer-reviewed publications, holds six patents, and contributed to three book chapters. He has delivered more than seventy invited talks at major international conferences in the U.S., Europe, and Asia. Dr. Novosad is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, a Senior Member of IEEE, and a recipient of the University of Chicago Medal and Distinguished Performance Award.
