Argonne’s CAMP Facility is a DOE-supported facility that allows battery researchers to manufacture full-size prototype battery electrodes and cells (pouch and 18650 format cells) using pilot-scale semi-automated equipment in a dry room environment. The overall mission of the CAMP Facility is to enable the transition of new advanced battery materials from research laboratories to industrial production through independent validation and analysis in commercially relevant cell formats.

To accomplish our mission, the CAMP Facility is outfitted with semi-automated pilot-scale battery production equipment in a dry room capable of maintaining below 100 ppm moisture (with up to eight people). This production equipment can produce pouch cells of several different sizes as well as hard can cells (18650s), which are common formats in the lithium-ion battery industry. Argonne’s CAMP Facility is one of a few of its kind in the country. These capabilities are being used to evaluate novel battery chemistries created in battery R&D laboratories in the United States as well as around the world. By performing this R&D function, Argonne researchers will enable the quicker adoption of these new technologies by the battery industry for applications in electric vehicles and grid energy storage.

The CAMP Facility team is an integrated group of researchers that apply their skills in the following areas: materials validation, electrode and cell fabrication, diagnostics, and modeling. In addition to these areas, our work is coordinated with other electrochemical energy storage groups at Argonne National Laboratory. Several of the groups that CAMP works closely with are the Post Test Facility (who help elucidate failure mechanisms), Materials Engineering Research Facility (MERF) (for the scale up of promising battery materials) and the Electrochemical Analysis and Diagnostic Laboratory (EADL) (for prototype battery performance testing). Together these groups can fully address all aspects of battery technology.
