Middle School Regional Science Bowl Competition
Science Bowl Competition
Have you ever dreamed of winning Jeopardy and hearing the crowd erupt with excitement? You can make that dream a reality. The Department of Energy’s National Science Bowl challenges young students who are passionate about science and engineering to show off their talents in this academic competition.
Middle School teams from diverse backgrounds are comprised of four students, one alternate, and a teacher who serves as an advisor and coach. Students face off in a fast-paced, question-and-answer format challenge, and are tested on a wide range of science disciplines, including biology, chemistry, earth science, physics, energy, and math.
Due to the regional Science Bowl being virtually each year, here are some key things you can expect to be different from an on-site competition:
- Competition Format
This will be a head to head competition using an online buzzer system. Competing teams will be assigned a virtual room and all teams will be asked the same questions.
- Tech Needs
In addition to the camera on each competitors’ computer, a second camera will be necessary to view the workspace of each competitor. This is to ensure competitors are not using supplemental resources during the competition.
- Consent/Media Release
We will provide parents/guardians with a consent and media release form for each participant. A completed form is necessary for each participant in order to compete in the NSB.
Thinking about starting a team?
The Science Bowl is a challenging, fast-paced competition for students who show interest in learning more about STEM or excel at STEM subjects in the classroom.
For coaches, the prospect of preparing and selecting a successful team may be overwhelming. Fortunately, helpful resources, including competition rules, eligibility requirements, sample questions, and tips for preparing your team, are available on the National Science Bowl® Regional Competitions website.
