Directions to Argonne National Laboratory
To reach Argonne from O’Hare International Airport, take I-294 south to I-55. Exit west on I-55 (toward St. Louis) and continue for about four miles to Cass Avenue. Exit south on Cass and turn right at the Argonne sign on Northgate Road, immediately south of I-55. Follow Northgate Road to the Visitor Reception Center. (Google Maps)
To reach Argonne from Midway Airport, take Cicero Avenue north to I-55. Enter I-55 south and continue for about 14 miles to Cass Avenue. Exit south on Cass and turn right at the Argonne sign on Northgate Road, immediately south of I-55. Follow Northgate Road to the Visitor Reception Center.
Using GPS navigation: Visitors are recommended to enter location text as “Cass Avenue and Northgate Road, Lemont, Illinois” in order to reach the Visitor Reception Center at the Main Gate entrance. Otherwise you may be directed to alternate gate entrances which are controlled-access.
By Public Transportation
To reach Argonne by public transportation, take the Metra train to the Westmont Metra station. PACE bus #715 provides connections between Westmont and Argonne only in the morning and evening, and only on weekdays; there is no weekend service. For details, please consult the PACE schedule.

- Northwestern-Argonne Carpool: A user-run service that travels daily between the Northwestern Evanston Campus and the Argonne National Lab Campus. Students, professors and researchers affiliated with Northwestern are encouraged to take advantage of this carpool, which is fully funded by the Northwestern University Office for Research. Only Northwestern University students and employees may use the carpool.
- Argonne – University of Chicago Shuttle Bus: A free shuttle bus makes round trips between Argonne National Laboratory and The University of Chicago. Important: The shuttle may not be used for the purpose of commuting to work. The purpose of the shuttle is to promote collaboration between colleagues at the University of Chicago and Argonne by making it easier for them to visit one another and attend seminars, conference and other events at both campuses.
