Jason Hall, a Radiation Research Analyst in Argonne National Laboratory’s Strategic Security Sciences division, specializes in radiation data and detection systems. Jason’s work supports the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) mission to address illegal trafficking (handling) of nuclear materials.
Growing up, Jason loved adventure and the outdoors. “As a child, I was the quintessential Boy Scout, always ready for an adventure in the great outdoors—camping was my happy place! I spent my summers earning merit badges and mastering the art of building the perfect campfire.” He also had a deep passion for math and science, which led him to attend a radio astronomy camp as a child. Even though he was introverted – often found with his nose in a book – he embraced challenges, whether it was solving a tough math problem or exploring the night sky.
When asked when he decided what he wanted to do as his career, he replied, “Honestly, I’m still deciding that! I believe you’re never really done learning or evolving.” Jason has always been into analytics—even before it was trendy or called “data science.” Getting his master’s in data science later in his career was a pivotal moment, and as he continues his journey, he is excited to see where it takes him next.
At Argonne, Jason uses his skills in data processing, coding, developing or refining databases, technical writing, and briefing customers. Hall’s work is important because it helps ensure that normal activities such as using public transportation or attending a concert or sporting event are safe. Not surprisingly, working with data is Jason’s favorite part of his job.
“I love diving into the numbers, mining for interesting trends, and creating applications, tools, models, or visualizations that are not only creative but also incredibly useful. It’s like solving a puzzle every day. I also get a kick out of playing with the detection equipment; there’s something exciting about seeing the tech in action. On top of that, I really enjoy connecting with other scientists and agents at our national labs and federal partners. It’s fascinating to learn how they approach CBRN challenges, and those collaborations always spark new ideas and perspectives.”
Jason also has a keen interest in exploring AI and machine learning technologies integration in traditional testing and evaluation platforms. Outside of work, Jason loves to keep up with his energetic, 13-year-old daughter and enjoys playing chess.
For students interested in STEM careers, Jason advises keeping an open mind to various opportunities, embracing fresh perspectives and new skill sets, and learning the value of connecting with others. If he could tell his younger self something, it would be that it’s okay to ask for help and that life is a team effort.
