W.J. Cody Associates

Candidates must be currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program in applied computer science, computational science, or a related field at a U.S institution.

This fellowship was created in memory of  William J. Jim” Cody, who played a key role in the Mathematics and Computer Science Division in the development, testing, distribution and certification of numerical software.

As a Cody Associate, you will work actively with Argonne scientists in designing, analyzing, and implementing algorithms and software for scientific computing at extreme scale. Researchers in the Mathematics and Computer Science Division will help you gain new insights into parallel programming models, runtime systems and compilers; data management and storage; edge computing; performance modeling and optimization; software engineering; data analysis and visualization; machine learning and computer vision; and quantum computing and quantum networks. You will work in a research environment that includes the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility, with access to one of DOE’s leadership-class computers.

These opportunities are offered during the summer as 10-14 week appointments.

Applications open on November 1st, and close on January 15th.

Transportation

Travel will be paid only for students whose permanent and school addresses are more than fifty miles away from Argonne. Travel expenses are reimbursed consistent with the terms detailed in the laboratory acceptance letter and pursuant to all Global Travel Office procedures. Travel reimbursement is based on a round-trip from the traveler’s trip origin (trip origin to Argonne and Argonne back to trip origin).

Transportation expenses will be reimbursed on the basis of the most direct route. Travelers may choose to drive only if the distance, using the most direct route, is less than 300 miles one way from Argonne. No per diem or lodging costs will be reimbursed while en route. We will calculate distance according to MapQuest. Travel will be reimbursed at the current government rate up to a maximum of $500.00 round-trip.
