Energy Research and Development

Shaping and securing our energy future

Having reliable, clean, and affordable energy sources is central to ensuring a strong economy, a healthy environment, and a secure nation.

In collaborations that combine our expertise with that of industry, academia and other government laboratories, our scientists and engineers deliver research tools and solutions that enable access to affordable, environmentally clean energy, and reduce our dependence on foreign energy sources.

Energy Zones Mapping Tool

Tool for the Eastern Interconnection States’ Planning Council (EISPC) to provide EISPC members and stakeholders with the web-based decision support system with capabilities to identify and map areas with high suitability for clean power generation

Argonne’s catalysis program covers both basic and applied R&D focusing on developing new catalyst technologies as well as developing a fundamental understanding of catalytic processes

Advanced Photon Source Upgrade

The APS Upgrade project will increase the brightness of the APS high-energy (hard) x-ray beams. This will equip researchers for the groundbreaking discoveries and transformational innovations that create new products and industries and generate jobs.

Argonne has a variety of water projects spread across divisions that focus on resilience, simulating water flows, and monitoring water use and quality in urban and rural areas.

Clean Cities

Advancing the nation’s economic, environmental and energy security by supporting local actions to reduce petroleum consumption in transportation

Fuel Kinetics

Investigating the autoignition behavior of transportation-relevant fuels to better understand how these influence combustion in advanced internal combustion engines
